This Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer was assembled by Ferrari in early January of 1984 as a standard production model. It was ordered new by:
Dr. Michael Phillip Blum of Huntington Beach, CA.
Via: Newport Imports Ferrari in Newport Beach, California USA
Dr. Blum was a well known Orange County surgeon and prominent Ferrari enthusiast. He personally travelled to the Ferrari Factory in Maranello, Italy to oversea the details of the final assembly and purchase of this Ferrari. It was issued a new certificate of origin (Certificato d’Origine) No. 26337 in January of 1984 and authorized by Ferrari for retail release and shipping under Tourist “EE” exemption status. The original Ferrari Factory invoice shows the ex-Factory purchase price in US dollars was $61,500. Dr. Blum was given an unspecified “special discount” of $6,500 bringing his cost at the Factory to $55,000.
The car was ordered and completed in the color “Rosso Metalica” and as related to Dr. Blum at the time of completion was one of only two BBs ever executed in this color.
Upon completion, this Ferrari was shipped by ocean from Genoa, Italy to the Port of Los Angeles and then delivered to Newport Imports on February 16, 1984. Dr. Blum completed final payment and the purchase was formally recorded on February 6, 1984. The sale of this Ferrari BBi was extremely unique in that the car was sold through an authorized California Ferrari dealer and included one-year Ferrari Factory warranty
Included at the time of purchase was the full EPA/DOT Federalization process for the import of the car as well as California Department of Motor Vehicle / Bureau of Automotive Repair “smog” certification, tax, license and registration.
The EPA Emissions Certification was completed on May 10, 1984 and the final DOT Certification completed on July 11, 1984.
The Federal EPA/DOT and eventually the California State DMV required conversion took nearly seven months. On August 29, 1984, Mr. Blum was finally issued a 30-day “Temporary Operating Permit” by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Several weeks later, California state plates, No. “2BMG248” were issued and mailed to Mr. Blum. On November 14, 1984, Mr. Blum went to the Department of Motor Vehicles, Fullerton, California regional office and paid $975 for license and registration.
Over the next nine years, Dr. Blum performed only routine service and maintenance to this Ferrari. He had all worked performed by Ferrari Technologies of Orange, California. There are records for a complete “30,000 Mile” major service in July of 1995 at which time the car had covered 12,424 kilometers. Additional services were performed on April 3, 1996 (12,620 kms) and April 9, 2002 (13,251 kms.)
Dr. Blum kept and maintained this Ferrari without consideration for time or expense until he sold it in October of 2004 to BGMC Classic Cars / Black Horse Motors in Los Angeles, CA.
Black Horse Motors had a full engine out / 30,000-mile major service and additional work completed on November 11, 2004 at which point this Ferrari had covered 13,000 kms from new.
In January 2005, this Ferrari was purchased by Dwight Dean & James. D. Davis of Bloomsburg, PA. The car was however instead delivered after some additional service work and the fitting of new tires to their home in Manzanita, Oregon.
On July 7, 2005, this Ferrari registered to Dwight Dean & J. D. Davis of Manzanita, Oregon. A new Oregon title and plates “536 BVV” were issued at that time.
On April 27th, 2006, this Ferrari was sold by D.D. & J.D. Davis to the Monterey Auction Company of Valleso, CA. At the time of sale, this Ferrari had covered 17,294 kilometers. The sale was handled by Dana Santavy on behalf of the auction company and RM Auctions of Ontario, Canada.
On July 6, 2006, the Monterey Auction Company sold this Ferrari to Valley Classic Auto of Santa Barbara, California. The car was kept by the owner of Valley Classic, stored and not used until delivery to Symbolic Motor Car Company on March 17, 2010.
This Ferrari has had only two retail owners since new. It is one of only two examples painted in the color “Rosso Metalica” which defies accurate description; even photos do not do full justice to the unique hue. This Ferrari was ordered new by a prominent California enthusiast who personally inspected it at the Ferrari Factory. Despite being a non-complying vehicle, it was sold new in California and given one-year Ferrari Factory warranty. It has full EPA / DOT / California Bureau of Automotive Repair releases and full records, tools and books from new.
This Ferrari has covered only 17,328 kilometers or just under 11,000 miles from new. All services remain current and up to date. Just over 4,000 kms (2,400 miles) have been covered since the last documented major engine out / belt service was completed.
